12 Antique Lucky Charms for the Zodiac

It's almost Shamrock time! And who can resist the luck o' the Leprechaun and the four leaf clover? Of course, the shamrock is just one of a number of good luck pieces. But to my mind, rather ordinary. So here's a wee Zodiac treasure hunt list to use as a guide to finding uncommon lucky charms.

It's almost Shamrock time! And who can resist the luck o' the Leprechaun and the four leaf clover? Of course, the shamrock is just one of a number of good luck pieces, but to my mind, rather ordinary. So here's a wee Zodiac treasure hunt list to use as a guide to finding uncommon lucky charms. All charms suggested here are antiques! But relatively inexpensive, costing no more than a new charm you might pick up at a boutique or jewelry store. My goal is to send you scurrying out to find luck on your own. I am of the mind that searching for and finding a good luck charm carries an extra dose of good fortune, also known as a lucky find. Here are 12 different antique lucky charms: one for each Sun Sign in the Zodiac.

Aries: Hearts - any and all kinds of heart shapes can be found at your local thrift or antique store in the form of charms for bracelets, and heart lockets, pins, even rocks and stones shaped like valentine hearts (great as paperweights). Heart symbols reveal where Aries is right now - in the love zone and hoping to stay there. Hearts are usually portrayed as red, and what is more red than the sign of Aries? Treasure hunt for just the perfect heart charm to carry in your pocket or your purse. You can spend very little or a lot, depending on the materials involved. That's up to you. Put heart charms in or on top of your desk and definitely under your pillow to bring you luck in love this year.

Taurus: Horses. Not literally, but figuratively in the shape of horse charms or pins, and small horse figurines - or a horse shoe pin or charm. Horses are farm animals, after all, just like your symbol, the bull. Not too far a stretch in my mind, but it's the horse that will bring you luck this year. Horses symbolize strength and loyalty, and Taurus you could use some of both right now. Keep persevering; you'll get there, eventually. If you treasure hunt for horse figurines, purchase only the smallest miniatures to put on your desk or to carry around with you. Mini horses are generally made of blown glass, china or celluloid plastic, and they are plentiful in antique malls or on the internet.

Gemini: Keys, especially the antique kind. Search for keys that attract you (most likely found in a jumbled pile in your favorite antique store or flea market). Single keys are not expensive, and they come in different shapes and materials (likely brass or pot metal). Place these keys in various places around your house, and carry a small one in your purse or your pocket. Antique keys symbolize an opening and a way in - which is something very much on your mind these days, Gemini.

Cancer/Moonchild:  Netsukes. Miniature, hard-carved Japanese figures, dating back to the 17th Century that was once used as toggles on kimono "pockets". The most valuable Netsuke are made of ivory, but you also can find fake ivory/plastic Netsukes in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as carved from wood and bone. Netsuke figures include monkeys, acorns, old men, and interesting carved shapes. You often see Netsuke in antique stores or on the internet, and you can buy them reasonably if you look enough. If you come across some, select the figures that most appeal to you, and they will be your lucky charm(s). Carry in your purse or pocket, and put in your bedroom or near the front door. If money is no object, you can find some pricey antique Netsuke, destined to grow in value. They will enhance wisdom and longevity, bringing luck to the security-conscious Moon Child this year.

Leo: Poker chips. I see luck and money surrounding Leo this year, and what better lucky charm than an antique clay poker chip(s) that you can find on the internet or an antique store (less costly on the internet). Your lucky poker chip could also be a souvenir from friendly game of Hold 'Em (though that chip would probably not qualify as an antique). You can carry your chip around in your pocket or place on your desk for lucky work ideas. Antique clay poker chips featured a variety of charming graphics (including the shamrock, the heart and the horse). If you want your luck to increase, stay away from plastic poker chips (they don't count here or anywhere else, for that matter). It is the enduring quality of the antique poker chip that is meaningful for you, Lucky Leo. I would think you would want to "hold on to 'em" this year, until the economy improves.

Virgo: Buttons. I see Homespun Virgo fingering some lovely antique buttons made of ivory, china, or glass. Found buttons, by their nature, are lucky, as you know, especially when you pop one, and have no velcro handy!  Antique buttons are works of art - for example, those made of carved bakelite or featuring Art Nouveau or Art Deco designs. Buttons can be tiny - as small as most charms - or bigger than many. Display your buttons in an old mason jar or mounted in a shadow box. Remember to carry a few of your favorite buttons in your pocket or purse, where you can finger them when you need some luck. This lucky charm advises you to keep your own counsel, Virgo - in other words, "button up" when it comes to expressing your unsolicited opinions. Some people are pretty fragile these days, and they may not welcome your bold advice.

Libra: Vintage gum ball machine charms. Those were the Happy Days in the 1950s, when gumball machines were chock full of plastic charms contained in small plastic capsules. The charms were in the shape of tiny cowboys, guns, bowling pins, basketballs, fish, horses -- you name it, it was probably a charm. Somewhat earlier, in the 1930s or so, charms were smaller and made of celluloid. You might find Popeye, elephants, donkeys, scottie dogs and various other charming charms of this kind. You can find these inexpensively, Libra, on the internet or in antique stores. They are fun to carry around in your pocket or wallet or to string on a ribbon and wear around your neck. These charms are double-lucky, because they lasted 60 years or more before you found them! Libra, you are longing these days to get in touch with the good old days. These tiny antique whimsies cheer you up and inspire you to keep creating your own art. Your will find good luck in your art work, this year.

Scorpio: Coins. Depending on your personal taste or experience, Scorpio, your lucky coins may have come from a trip abroad or the safety deposit box of your favorite late Uncle. Old or shiny new, coins are lucky symbols in many cultures, including America's. We know it's perfectly lucky to pick up a heads-up penny we find on the sidewalk, but not a tail's-side down. Super Bowl games can't start without tossing one - (rather more lucky for one team than the other). Scorpio, take good care of your coins now -- place them in a china or glass dish in your bedroom or in a coin purse. Carry a few antique coins around with you, but hold safe to the rare antique coins (gold or Indian Heads, for example ). Many antique coins can be found reasonably on the internet or in antique shops. Coin charms signify your need to hold on to what you've got, Scorpio. This is not the time to take risks, no matter how good a deal looks.

Sagittarius. Dogs. I speak of dog charms here or miniature figurines, which you can find in an antique mall or on the internet. Vintage and antique dog charms for bracelets are fairly easy to find, as are miniature china or pottery dogs (but not glass dogs). Dogs have always been popular in the antique figurine category - and I've seen many breeds: boxers, scotties, mutts. Sagittarius you are an animal lover to begin with, so a dog charm or two is going to enhance your fortune this year. Someone loyal to you will do you a big favor! Place a few miniature dog figurines or charms (see Libra's celluloid charms, above) on your desk or in your bedroom. Remember the saying, "You lucky dog". Soon you will know why.

Capricorn: Stamps. Now stamps are not ordinarily considered lucky charms, but you can treasure hunt stamp charms or stamps crafted into charms and jewelry. I see stamps for you, Capricorn, because they symbolize lucky trips and travel ahead this year - and also a partnership with someone who lives far away. You can collect antique or vintage stamp easily - on the internet or in antique stores. Some of them are quite lovely - little miniature works of art from countries whose names have changed (for instance, Siam). If you treasure hunt for some antique stamps that appeal to only you, Capricorn, you can put them into a tiny glassine envelope and store in your desk or your nightstand.

Aquarius: Marbles. Just like the other "charms" mentioned here, marbles are small enough to be carried around in your pocket or your purse. There are lovely antique and vintage marbles - end-of-day marbles feature brilliant color splatters and sulphides feature miniature animals encased in glass. The older, handmade marbles are the most valuable, but you can also treasure hunt for antique marbles made of clay or made of steel (steelies). Rolling a marble around with your fingers is really quite satisfying - and lucky! Marbles represent the good luck of you hitting your goals straight-on, this year, Capricorn. You are right on target with your newest ideas. I recommend you carry one or two marbles around with you, in purse or pocket, and store a few special marbles in your nightstand or desk drawer (where they can't roll around). Be careful not to dent, chip, drop or "lose" them. As in most of the other charms mentioned here, you will have fun scouting out the marbles that appeal to you - either in antique fairs, flea markets or on internet auctions.

Pisces: Fish charms. What else, Pisces? Fish are lucky, like Koi, and there are many antique and vintage fish charms to be found; even fish costume jewelry pins (escalating in value, as we speak). You are the only sign I see with a charm that matches your Sun Sign, but that's just the way it is. I've seen some charming celluloid fish charms, with googlie eyes, and some with clear plastic bellies (very expensive). Still Pisces, carrying a fish charm around with you, and placing a few in your bedroom or inside your desk, will bring you luck as you successfully navigate the churning waters in many of your relationships these days. Tough-going right now, but you will prevail! Fish charms are not as easy to find as many other charms, but that's the thing about both fishing and treasure hunting, now isn't it? If those endeavors were that easy, who would bother?

If, as you read this list, you are a Gemini and you'd like to carry around a Taurus horse charm, (since horses are your Chinese symbol), please go ahead and do so. Attraction to other Zodiac charms also could be your rising or moon sign talking to you. The important thing is too inexpensively, but creatively, attract some luck through charms. Antique charms say a lot about the nature of good fortune.
